恋歌とは、
1110首、全20巻からなる 『古今和歌集（醍醐天皇 905年頃）』 の11から15巻目（恋一～恋五）にあたる計5巻より構成される 『古今集』 の恋歌は恋愛の進行プロセスによって配列されており、"時間の方は努めて短く切り縮めて、一瞬間の印象にとどめる"という、空間に力点を置いたものが多い 『万葉集』 短歌と比較して、時間制が重要視されている。
本作のテキストは、恋歌からは外れる 19 巻(雑体歌)冒頭の 1001 首目、短歌という標目で収録されているが実際は三十一文字を超え る長歌。読み人知らず。内容としては、「逢えない恋」を詠った恋の歌である。
